Frequently Asked Questions about Orthodontics and Braces
What is Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the dentistry branch specializing in procedures to correct and prevent teeth irregularities. These procedures may include teeth straightening, jaw alignment, or improving the overall appearance of a client’s teeth or face. Here at Tower Dental, we use the latest technology and the Tip-Edge system to treat tooth allignment.
What’s so special about The Tip-Edge system?
Tip-Edge, with its smaller brackets and dual-wire system, is “programmed” for maximum tooth movement throughout the treatment period. The design is ideal for faster treatments with fewer appointments than traditional brackets systems. Not only does it decrease discomfort, it all but eliminates the need for headgear. Needed appointments typically take less time than traditional systems.
At what age should I consider orthodontic care for my child?
According the American Association of Orthodontists, children should see an orthodontist by the age of 7. If your pediatric dentist has concerns about your child’s dental development, an appointment can be made with the orthodontist at an earlier age.
How does orthodontic treatment work?
Orthodontic treatment uses braces which apply a light, steady pressure that moves the teeth into correct alignment. The braces are applied to the teeth using brackets and archwire. The archwire is the component that allows light pressure to align the teeth.
Are there typical signs that braces may be needed?
Some signs may be front teeth protrusion, excessive space between teeth, finger or thumb sucking after age seven, crowding or overlapping of teeth, or uneven wear of teeth. If you notice these or other issues with yours or your child’s teeth, contact Tower Dental for a consultation.
How long does orthodontic treatment take with Tip-Edge?
As with any other system, there is not time-frame set is stone with Tip-Edge. It really varies on a case-by-case basis. Typically, orthodontic correction can range from 18-27 months and that may still be the case for your situation. However, with this system, it may take as little as 12 months. Again, treatment time will depend on your specific situation.
Is general dentist care still needed while wearing braces?
Absolutely! When wearing braces, food particles can not only get caught in teeth, but in the brackets, wires, and between the braces and teeth. Since these places may be difficult to reach with a toothbrush, it is imperative to have regular dental checkups to ensure your teeth remain healthy during your treatment.
Is it okay to remain active in my favorite sport while wearing braces?
Playing sports shouldn’t interfere with your favorite sport, but you may need to take precautions. For example, if you play a sport where contact is possible or definite, a mouth guard may be recommended.
Would an adult benefit from orthodontic treatment?
Orthodontic treatment can straighten teeth at any age. Straightened and aligned teeth can aid in digestion, as your food is chewed properly. Straightened teeth are also easier to clean, which becomes increasingly important as you get older.
Is adult treatment different from a child’s treatment?
With the Tip-Edge system that we use, adults receive the same treatment as adolescents. If there are special circumstances with your case, your doctor will communicate this to you.
